A fine knife with one big issue.

I was fortunate enough to have snagged one of the 50 Thunderbird knives that dropped a few of weeks ago. I got green with black blade. Out of the box, the fit and finish is excellent. The action is very smooth. All deployment means work well. However, it was lacking that satisfying "thwack" when deployed. The opening and closing feels a bit soft. The blade feels solid when opened. No movement up, down, or side to side. But the softness bothered me a bit. It reminded me a little of another button lock I own. It fails with the lightest of spine taps. So I tried it with the Thunderbird. I would hold it open, with the blade straight up and down so the butt of the handle is about 1.5 inches off of my rubber knife mat. I'll hold the bottom and use that as a pivot point. I let the knife drop on it's own. Hardly a torture test. It failed the first time and two times after that. Not sure what to do now. Return it? Attempt to fix it? New spring with more tension? I'll have to do something. I won't put this knife in my rotation because I don't trust it. I have has a supposably locking blade fold on me before. Not a pleasant experience. I really want this knife to work.

    Love the Thunderbird

What a great knife! I love the 3 forms of deployment. The tolerances on this knife are beyond microscopic. The blade design is great, and I love how the size and handle are 'just enough'. It feels like this knife is as minimalistic as it needs to be, yet has the features you'd want. It's an insane value for less than $200.

    So close...

This is a very good knife, but not quite great. The design overall is good but I have a couple of issues: the front flipper sticks up a bit too far, and the hole in the blade intended for reverse flicking with your middle finger is located a bit too high, so I have to change my grip to use it - both minor complaints that keep it from being great. Fit & finish are top notch, the button lock mechanism works beautifully, and the blade bevels are some of the nicest I've seen, at any price. It's easy to see why they are constantly out of stock.
